Gillingham had the head quarters of Kent (Fortress) Royal Engineers at the Submarine Mining School. Companies based there included Nos. 4 and 5 Electric Lights Companies and No. 3 Works Company
Watling Street drill hall has been demolished and replaced by housing. We understand that the lost building was 1930s and it had a Royal West Kent badge above its door.
