‘E' 4 Prince of Wales’ Own Yorkshire Regiment
1st Volunteer Battalion Alexandra Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
E Company – Armoury 10, Victoria Road
(This company had outlying detachments at Gilling, Eppelby and Reeth.)
Richmond was the home of regular Army at the Barracks, Gallowgate, the Territorial element at the Armoury, 10 Victoria Road. According to Kelly, 1913, this unit was ‘E' Company 4th Battalion Prince of Wales’ Own Yorkshire Regiment. Kelly, 1893, refers to Victoria place.
An article in the Northern Echo, Thursday 29th August, 2002, says that the former drill hall is to be demolished and the site used for homes. It summarises the history of the building as being a former military barracks, a drill hall, a school canteen and, since 1984, a dance studio. While the principle of redeveloping the site for housing was acceptable to planning officers, the historical importance of the building had to be determined before any decisions were made.
The story was followed up in the Northern Echo on Friday 7th February, 2003. As soon as English Heritage stated that the building had ‘no real architectural merit’, planners sanctioned its demolition and new homes were to be permitted on the site.
