‘The H Company 6th West Suffolk Rifle Volunteer Corps (now the 2nd V.B.S.R.)was established in 1861, and numbers 89 men. The armoury and head quarters are on the Fordham road, at the new drill hall built in 1887. Rifle Range, Cambridge road.’ (Kelly, 1891)

‘H Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion Suffolk Regiment, head quarters & drill hall, Fordham road, Exeter road.’ (Kelly, 1896)

This building appears to have been built in two phases. The simple Drill Hall on Fordham road, Newmarket is shown on the 1903 OS maps. The 1927 OS maps show the long extension building behind, so we surmise that it was there in about 1924/5 to allow for the time bewteen surveying and publishing the map.
